HUNT LIKE AN OTTER

This was a collaborative project created with four other designers from a range of disciplines in partnership with Wellington Zoo.

It is a sensory box designed to educate children visiting the zoo about how otters hunt for food, using just their sense of touch. Within the illustrated box, there are a number of individually designed wooden animals such as a fish, frog and a snail, teaching children about the different kinds of prey otters eat in their natural environment.

The research process for this project involved following the methodology of design ethnography, using field observations and interviews with members of staff at the zoo to inform the project.

‘Hunt Like An Otter’ received the Springload Award for Excellence within Design for Social Innovation and has a new home at Wellington Zoo.
